Behind Estepona rises the Sierra Bermeja, with its reddish rock and a mountain road that climbs towards Los Reales and carries on to the Genal valley. It is a long ascent, one bend straight into the next, and it is a real test of brakes and tyres. Between the mountains and the coast there are also plenty of country houses and hillside fincas, reached by dirt tracks that turn to mud in winter and throw up dust in summer.

At the other end is everyday driving: the A-7 and AP-7 to Marbella, Málaga or the airport, at motorway speeds, with the kilometres piling up quickly. For that mix, an SUV with modern all-wheel drive and a torquey engine fits well, and if you cover a lot of distance each year, a diesel genuinely makes sense here.
