4x4 La Azucarera — todoterrenos y SUV

A used SUV that suits Fuengirola

Fuengirola is flat, compact and well connected, and that changes the car you need. Plenty of people here barely use it during the week and take it out for Málaga, the airport or a day trip inland. For that kind of life a big off-roader is overkill, and a compact automatic SUV, petrol or hybrid, usually fits far better. We are in Málaga itself, not Fuengirola: you can come and see the car or we can bring it to you.

Driving in Fuengirola: few hills, little space

Inside Fuengirola there are hardly any hills. The challenge is different: narrow streets in the centre and in Los Boliches, heavy traffic along the seafront, especially in summer, and not many parking spaces. What helps here is a short car with sensors or a reversing camera and good all-round visibility, rather than something tall and wide that will not fit the space in your communal garage.

What is worth thinking about is how much you will actually drive it. A car that covers few kilometres, nearly all of them short, is a poor match for a modern diesel: the particulate filter needs longer runs to clean itself, and in town it ends up causing trouble. A petrol or hybrid SUV copes with that life much better. If you head up to Mijas Pueblo or into the hills now and then, you still do not need four-wheel drive; an engine with a bit in reserve for the climbs is enough.

Questions from Fuengirola

  • Usually not. A modern diesel needs longer runs for the particulate filter to regenerate, and on short trips it eventually clogs. If you do little open-road driving, a petrol or a hybrid will give you fewer headaches. If you cover a lot of motorway kilometres every week, a diesel starts to make sense again.
