Used 4x4s and SUVs for Alhaurín el Grande

A lot of people in Alhaurín el Grande do not live in the town itself but in a country house somewhere on the hillsides, and many of them are British or Northern European and have been here for years. For nearly everyone, the car is the only way home, and the last stretch of lane decides which car will do. Come and try one in Málaga, or we can bring it to your door, with transfer and warranty included.

The north side of the Sierra de Mijas and its lanes

The town sits on the north face of the Sierra de Mijas, looking out over the Guadalhorce valley, and the area around it is dotted with scattered houses reached by dirt or concrete lanes, often with steep ramps and tight bends. The tarmac is usually the easy part. The hard part is the final stretch, in the rain, on loose gravel, or reversing to let someone else through.

This is where an all-wheel-drive SUV earns its keep: it gets up a wet concrete ramp without spinning, it is comfortable on the A-404 and it will not punish you on fuel. Look at ground clearance and overall size too, because many lanes are narrow and have drainage humps. If your drive is loose earth on a steep slope, or you tow, then a proper off-roader with a low range is the better buy, and we will tell you so straight.

  • On concrete, even a steep ramp, an all-wheel-drive SUV is usually enough, especially on good tyres. Where front-wheel drive lets you down is in the wet, pulling away halfway up. If the ramp turns into loose earth at the top, or you tow, look at an off-roader with a low range.
