Terraces, concrete ramps and descents with a load on

Vélez has two sides. On the coast, Torre del Mar is a seafront promenade, flat, with summer traffic. Inland, as soon as you leave the A-356, the terraces of avocados and mangoes begin, on very steep hillsides, with narrow lanes, hairpin bends, grooved concrete ramps and dirt sections that the rain washes out and leaves covered in loose stone. Plenty of people go up every day to irrigate, pick or just check on the farm.

For working up there, an off-roader with a low range is the serious option: short gearing for climbing and, above all, for coming down loaded without cooking the brakes. It is worth not going too long, because on some bends a long-wheelbase pick-up needs a three-point turn. If you live in Torre del Mar or in town and only occasionally go up to a country house with good access, an all-wheel-drive SUV will do the job for less.
