Down below is the Guadalhorce valley floor: flat, with orange and lemon groves, warehouses, plant nurseries and country houses reached along dirt tracks between the plots. Up the hill is Cártama village itself, with narrow, steep streets. In between, a lot of people drive the A-357 into Málaga every day.
The valley tracks are flat, but after rain they turn to mud, and that is exactly where a front-wheel-drive SUV ends up spinning its wheels. For this mix, an all-wheel-drive SUV is usually the best fit: comfortable and economical on the dual carriageway, and able to get you out of the lane after a downpour. A low range is only worth having if you will be towing something heavy or doing proper farm work.
