Marbella sits at the foot of Sierra Blanca, and you notice it as soon as you leave the beach behind. Many developments climb the hillside with steep streets and tight bends, and two genuine mountain roads head out of town: the Ojén road, from which you climb up to the Juanar refuge, and the Istán road, which runs past the La Concepción reservoir. Both are bend after bend, where a car that brakes well and does not wallow is worth having.
Down on the A-7 and AP-7 it is long-distance comfort that counts, and in Puerto Banús or the town centre, being able to fit into tight underground car parks. That is why a premium SUV with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox suits Marbella better than a low-range off-roader. Bear in mind that on these cars the expensive faults tend to be air suspension, electronics and the gearbox, and those are the first things to check before you buy, with us or with your own mechanic.

On steep tarmac it is not essential, but it helps in the rain and on sharply angled garage ramps. If you also drive the Ojén or Istán roads regularly, or your house has an unmade access, the all-wheel drive of a modern SUV is the sensible choice.
